#YogaAmbassadorLove: An Interview with OKIINO Ambassador, Laura Burkhart12. May 2016
Utilizing Yoga and ambition, Laura Burkhart hopes to have a global impact on people, communities and animals. As a recovering over-achiever, workaholic and previous dancer, Laura sought out yoga to help combat the serious health problems her body was experiencing as a result of a decade of major stress and insomnia. She gravitated toward yoga because it reminded her of the similar meditative movement she found when she danced. The main difference she discovered between yoga and dance was that yoga encouraged her to respect her body rather than push her body beyond it’s limits. The healing, grounding benefits she received from yoga, in conjunction with how the practice enabled to her connect with her authentic core, was so profound that she decided to change the course of her work life to help others find the same relief and peace she had found through a fluid, meditative vinyasa practice.
OKIINO: What are 5 words your friends would use to describe you?
Laura Burkhart: Caring, Driven, Adventurous, Fun, & Humorous
OKIINO: What types of activities do you love & why are you passionate about them?
Laura Burkhart: Besides practicing yoga, I love to:
Walk in nature or around town: Walking is meditative and relaxing for me. I get some of my best ideas when I go for a walk and it always puts me in a good mood!
Travel: I’ve always been very adventurous! I always learn something new, meet new friends and the overall experience broadens my outlook and changes me in a positive way.
Trying something new: I like trying new things, be it a new restaurant, new place to travel, new route to drive, new activity, or new playlist. I am passionate about growing and gaining different perspectives.
Spending time with Friends and Family: They make me laugh, keep me grounded, and bring enjoyment by sharing my life.
Spending time with animals: There is a lot to learn from animals. I think they have far more to teach us then we do them. They are authentic, real, raw, untainted and have the most beautiful way of showing unconditional love.
OKIINO: What is your purpose/mission?
Laura Burkhart: My mission is to create space for people to peel away the layers imposed by society, to connect with their heart, and joyfully move forward in life from their most authentic core. I want people to be happy and at peace with where they are at on the way to where they are going in conjunction with believing in themselves, their abilities and what they have to offer to this world. On a larger scale I want to help those in need of clean water. I’m also passionate about people respecting and caring for animals respect on a local and global level. I have offered humanitarian classes and retreats and I would like to encompass humanitarian efforts in my work again.
OKIINO: Why are you excited to be an OKIINO Ambassador?
Laura Burkhart: I am excited to be an ambassador with OKIINO because I love the time, effort and heart put into OKIINO's highly functional, beautiful, artistic leggings for yoga, surfing and SUP. I love that the designs are originally hand painted by an artist. I also love the fact that I know who made the pants and that I am “shopping local”. I really like and appreciated how OKIINO values giving back to the community! I also like that the leggings are unique and not mass-produced. It’s exciting being apart of a company that is new and that has a lot of room to grow. So, it’s an honor to stand by and be an Ambassador for such a high quality product that has a beautiful mission behind it. I also like how there are not a lot of ambassadors so it feels very special.
OKIINO: What impact would you like to have as an OKIINO Ambassador?
Laura Burkhart: As an ambassador, I’m really interested in introducing more people to OKIINO's awesome leggings and purpose to give back locally, online and at events. I'm excited to be apart of the decision making process for the new designs and I look forward to being apart of, and hosting, an OKIINO event.
OKIINO: What causes are most important to you?
Laura Burkhart: People having access to clean water is very important to me. We can’t live without water and I think as a whole we should make sure everyone in the world has access to clean water; this should be at the top of our world’s “to do” list. I’m also passion about people treating animals well, including fish in the sea and birds in the air. We need to treat them with respect. This planet is their home too and they have a right to live in a safe, unpolluted, natural environment. I’m highly against animal cruelty. I think that anyone who intentionally harms an animal should be put in jail…… for a LONG time. I enjoy working with Water.org, Northern California Family Dog Rescue, and Muttville Senior Dog Rescue
OKIINO: What do you want your legacy to be?
Laura Burkhart: I want to help people and animals locally and globally on a deeper level. Overtime, I want to have more of my focus to be on clean water issues and helping animals, and less focused on the asana practice. I would like to leave behind/contribute: a lot of water wells, to have helped people in person and online have less stress, anxiety and connect their authentic core, and contribute to better conditions for animals. I also want to show deep care and love for those around me through hugs, encouragement, by listening or just having fun together.
